Worldly Wraps are inspired by furoshiki, Japanese for “wrapping cloth”. Furoshiki come from the practice of bundling clothes at public baths in the Japanese Edo Period (1603-1867). Over time, furoshiki were used to protect goods when transporting and decorating goods for gifts.

 

I discovered fabric wrapping in the 1980s while traveling in Japan.  A  shopkeeper wrapped my new kimono in a simple lovely green and white floral printed cloth. The wrapping served beautifully as a bag, and my purchase felt like a gift.
